Around the area
Muntelier – Europe's oldest dated settlement
You sit on the wonderful terrace of the Hotel Bad Murtensee, knowing that a settlement already existed here in 3867 BC. You enjoy a drink in the Beach House. Incredibly, the oldest bread in the world was found in Muntelier in 1979. The Bernese bread researcher Max Währen described the dark-coloured find as a «more than 5,000-year-old pastry made from fine wheat flour».
World heritage on Lake Murten
You experience a wonderful boat trip on one of the three lakes. Incredibly, archaeologists from the Office for Archaeology have discovered many underwater settlements in the Murten and Neuchâtel lake region since the late 1990s.
European history was written in Murten
You enjoy the view from Murten's town wall. In 1476, European history was written right here. The Burgundian Wars ended the dominance of Charles the Bold and the Burgundians.
Mont Vully – Wistenlacherberg
You enjoy the evening atmosphere on the balcony of your room. Today, the hill range opposite, Mont Vully, is known for its good vineyards. But until the emigration of the Celtic Helvetii around 58 BC, there was an oppidum there, highlighting the strategic importance of this area as early as Roman times. It is no wonder that the Swiss Army also established positions there during the First World War, around 1914.
