Chef Beach House
Ruben Arbol
Chef at Beach House
Ruben is the good soul in our Beach House kitchen. Even when things get heated, he stays in a good mood. In the interview, he tells us what he enjoys about his work and about working as part of the team.
Where are you from and how long have you already been working at Beach House?
I grew up in Granada, Spain and have been working at Beach House every spring to autumn for two years now. Back then, a friend from Spain was working at Hotel Bad Murtensee and asked me whether I wanted to come here. I like Murten very much, so I will see that I can also work here in the region during the winter months.
You often cook yourself tasty lunches in your free time. Is cooking a passion for you?
Yes, it is a kind of meditation. When I cook for myself, I can really switch off from day-to-day life, which can sometimes be hectic. I also like trying out new dishes and I enjoy it when others taste my treats and like them too. My favourite dish in summer is gazpacho. The cold soup is a favourite dish of Spaniards.
You are jointly responsible for the herb garden
I look after the herb garden together with other employees. The small garden is behind the house, and I can relax there well when I want to 'switch off' in my head. We now have cherry tomatoes, pepperoncini and strawberries. It is a pleasure to see everything grow and then to be able to create delicious menus with it.
What do you particularly like about your work and the team?
I like the team spirit at Beach House. The work is sometimes very intense, and shifts in the kitchen can be demanding too. That is why it is important that the team works well together with different people from different nations. Despite the hard work, we also have a lot of fun together. That is important, also for the guests. They notice it. I also like the concerts that take place with us in summer.
What do you do in your free time?
I love the lake. I go swimming or, from time to time, out on the water with the SUP. 'Sünnele' is of course also part of it. I also like going to Bern or, in summer, taking the inflatable boat along the Aare from Thun to Bern. It is a special experience with all the boats and the people, all in a great mood.
What insider tip in the region do you have for our guests?
As so often, the good thing is very close by. I invite everyone who has never been to our Beach House to have a drink one evening at sunset. The view of the lake and Mont Vully is unique and unforgettable. We employees enjoy it too. It is virtually like an extra wage for being able to work at such a beautiful place.
Thank you Ruben for these insights.
