Chef at the Beach House

Ruben Arbol
Chef at the Beach House

Ruben is the heart and soul of our Beach House kitchen. Even when things get intense, he always keeps a positive attitude. In this interview, he tells us what he enjoys about his work and working together as a team.

Where do you come from and how long have you been working at the Beach House?
I grew up in Granada, Spain, and I have been working at the Beach House from spring to autumn for the past two years. A friend from Spain had worked at Hotel Bad Murtensee at the time and asked me if I would like to come here. I really enjoy living in Murten, so I am hoping to find work in the region during the winter months as well.

You often cook delicious lunches in your free time. Is cooking a passion for you?
Yes, it is a kind of meditation. When I cook for myself, it helps me unwind from the sometimes hectic daily routine. I also enjoy trying new dishes and love it when others taste my creations and enjoy them too. My favourite summer dish is gazpacho. This cold soup is a true classic in Spanish cuisine.

You are also partly responsible for the herb garden
I take care of the herb garden together with other members of staff. The little garden is located behind the house, and it is a great place for me to relax and switch off mentally. We have recently added cherry tomatoes, peperoncini and strawberries. It is rewarding to watch everything grow and then create delicious menus with the fresh ingredients.

What do you particularly enjoy about your work and the team?
I really like the team spirit at the Beach House. The work can sometimes be very intense, and working in the kitchen can be demanding. That is why it is important that the team, made up of people from different countries and backgrounds, works well together. Despite the hard work, we also have a lot of fun together. That is important for the guests too – they notice it. I also enjoy the concerts that take place here during the summer.

What do you do in your free time?
I love the lake. I go swimming or occasionally head out onto the water with my SUP. Sunbathing is naturally part of it too. I also enjoy going to Bern or taking a rubber dinghy trip along the River Aare from Thun to Bern in summer. It is a special experience with all the boats and the people who are always in a great mood.

Do you have a hidden gem in the region to recommend to our guests?
As is often the case, the best things are very close by. I invite everyone who has never visited our Beach House before to come and enjoy a drink one evening at sunset. The view over the lake and Mont Vully is unique and unforgettable. We employees enjoy it too. It is almost like an extra salary for being able to work in such a beautiful place.

Thank you, Ruben, for these insights.
